He wasn’t quite sure what he was doing. But her warm skin was sending pulses through his fingers. Snow was still falling, landing on her cheeks and eyelashes and all he wanted to do was kiss it off.

Kiss it off.

After three years, he finally wanted to kiss someone again.

The thought was terrifying. He wanted to step back. Step back and rethink things.

But he just couldn’t move. He just didn’t want to break the connection.

The cold air was stuck somewhere in his chest, not letting him suck anymore in.

One thought was circulating in his brain. Jessica could be stuck here for Christmas.

When he’d met her two days ago and realized she’d have to stay overnight, he’d been exasperated.

But having Jessica in the house wasn’t quite as bad as he’d expected. In fact, it had proved quite interesting. When was the last time he’d had someone to talk to in the evening?

When was the last time he’d enjoyed sitting down to dinner with someone? Wanted to actually talk to someone about something other than work?

He was trying to find some words but they all seemed stuck in his throat.

The smile disappeared from Jessica’s face and her grip on his fingers loosened.

She was going to step back. She was going to step away. Inside, something burned.

“If you get stranded, how about you let me do the cooking? I’m not sure about pizza for Christmas dinner.”

Her blue eyes sparkled. “You don’t know about my specialty pizza yet.” She reached up with her other hand and touched his nose. “Don’t knock it till you try it.”

This time, she did step back just as one of the kids came up and tugged his jacket. “I’m hungry. Can we go and get the cookies?”

Matt blinked back to reality. Jessica had turned away and was walking slowly. “Absolutely,” he said just a little too brightly as he slung his arm around the little guy’s shoulders. “I know a shortcut. Let’s go this way and hope the reindeer follow us.”

He licked his lips and tried to ignore the fact his heart was racing in his chest.

Jessica had stuck her hands back in her pockets and fell into step next to one of the teachers.

They tramped along in the snow together.

And somehow, it just didn’t seem quite so cold.
